Since 1869, the Little Sisters of the Poor have served the elderly poor in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. During that time they have welcomed an estimated 15,000 elderly men and women of all backgrounds with very limited financial means, caring for them with love and respect until death. After 100 years on Valley Street near John’s Hopkins Hospital, funds were successfully raised for the construction of a then state-of-the-art home for the aged in Catonsville, dedicated under the patronage of St. Martin of Tours. The Little Sisters chose this name in honor of Archbishop Martin J. Spalding who first invited them to minister to the aged poor in Baltimore. It was during their centennial year, on May 25, 1969, that the Little Sisters moved into the “new” St. Martin’s Home, originally designed for 240 aged persons in double and triple-occupancy rooms. Today, Residents enjoy private rooms and expanded activity areas. Two apartment units enable the well elderly to benefit from the family atmosphere while maintaining their independence. The Home also includes one assisted living unit and two units that provide comprehensive nursing care.
The Activities personnel are looking for volunteers to spread cheer to the Residents. Volunteer groups of 4-8 people are ideal.
